Common milkweed
Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the single most important monarch host plant in the Corn Belt. It spreads by rhizome as well as seed, so a modest seeding rate produces expanding patches that support monarch egg-laying through the summer.
Why landowners plant common milkweed
- Monarch larvae feed almost exclusively on milkweed; A. syriaca is the workhorse host across the Midwest.
- Fragrant flower clusters feed bumble bees, honey bees, and hummingbird moths.

Site fit
Highly adaptable — succeeds on dry to mesic uplands, roadside edges, and disturbed field margins. Prefers full sun. Because it spreads aggressively by rhizome, keep rates modest in mixes intended for high forb diversity, and avoid heavy inclusion adjacent to row-crop ground where the landowner objects to spread.
Establishment
Seed needs cold-moist stratification — dormant seed it. Surface-sow or plant no deeper than 1/4 inch. First-year plants stay small; rhizome spread begins in year two and accelerates in years three through five.
Management
Responds well to prescribed fire and to periodic disturbance. Do not spray broadleaf herbicide in stands managed for monarchs. Mid-contract management that lightly disturbs soil often triggers a flush of new milkweed shoots.
