CRP seed in Texas.
Heat- and drought-adapted CRP seed for Texas acres.
Texas holds more CRP acres than any state except a handful of Plains neighbors, concentrated in the Panhandle, Rolling Plains, and Blackland Prairie. We match southern-ecotype grasses and heat-tolerant forbs to your rainfall zone — from 16-inch Panhandle uplands to 35-inch Blackland clay.

Soil moisture zones
Rainfall drops sharply east to west: 35+ inches in the Blackland Prairie, 22–28 inches in the Rolling Plains and Cross Timbers, and 16–20 inches in the High Plains. Choose shortgrass and mid-grass species west of I-35 and taller mesic species east of it.
When to plant in Texas
Plant warm-season natives from February through April in most of Texas, or in late summer ahead of fall moisture in the Panhandle. Dormant winter seeding works in the northern Panhandle but is risky on the Gulf side, where warm spells trigger early germination.
Program notes
Texas NRCS uses ecoregion-specific seeding specifications — Panhandle, Rolling Plains, Cross Timbers, Blackland, and South Texas mixes differ substantially. Confirm your Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) before ordering, and expect grazing and haying flexibility during declared drought.
Always confirm current requirements with your local USDA-NRCS and USDA-FSA field offices before ordering.
Pollinator & monarch angle
Texas is the funnel of the monarch migration: nearly the entire eastern population passes through in spring and fall. Fall-blooming Maximilian sunflower, frostweed, and gayfeather deliver outsized value here.
Texas CRP seed FAQ
›When should I plant CRP seed in Texas?
February through April is the primary window for warm-season natives across most of Texas, timed to spring moisture. In the Panhandle, late-summer seeding ahead of fall rain also works. Avoid mid-summer plantings, when heat and evaporation kill seedlings.
›Which grasses handle West Texas drought?
Blue grama, buffalograss, sideoats grama, and western wheatgrass persist on 16 to 20 inches of annual rainfall. Big bluestem and switchgrass generally need eastern Texas moisture and will thin out on High Plains uplands.
›Is Texas CRP good for quail?
Texas leads the country in bobwhite habitat work. CP33 buffers and diverse CP2 plantings that mix bunchgrasses, partridge pea, and annual forbs with bare ground between clumps produce the strongest quail response.
