Prairie smoke
Prairie smoke (Geum triflorum) opens the northern prairie bloom season with nodding pink flowers that mature into feathery pink seed plumes. Because it flowers in April and May, it feeds emerging bumble bee queens weeks before most prairie forbs wake up.

- Low-growing rosettes hold soil on thin, erodible upland ground.
- The smoky seed plumes are a landowner favorite and make a planting look intentional.

Site fit
Dry, well-drained, low-fertility uplands — gravelly hill prairie, sandy loam, and thin soils. Struggles on rich, moist, or heavily competitive sites where tall grasses shade it out. Best in short-grass company.
Establishment
Requires cold-moist stratification; dormant-seed in late fall. Slow to establish and easily outcompeted, so keep companion grass rates low where prairie smoke is a priority. First bloom is usually year three.
Management
Sensitive to heavy thatch. Periodic burning or light haying keeps litter from smothering rosettes. Do not burn during the April bloom window if the goal is seed set.
